How it's calculated
Fixed dates, nth-weekday rules (e.g. Thanksgiving = 4th Thursday of November) and Easter from the Gregorian computus. US: Saturday holidays are observed Friday, Sunday holidays Monday. UK: weekend holidays get a substitute weekday.
Frequently asked questions
Are one-off holidays included?
No — special bank holidays (like a coronation or jubilee) are announced separately and aren't in the rules.
What about Scotland and Northern Ireland?
They have extra or different bank holidays (e.g. St Andrew's Day, St Patrick's Day, 2 January in Scotland). This list is for England and Wales.
Do all US employers give these days off?
They're holidays for federal employees and many banks; private employers set their own policies.
