Frequently asked questions

UUID v4 or v7?

v4 is fully random. v7 (RFC 9562) starts with a timestamp, so IDs sort by creation time — much better for database primary keys and indexes.

Can two UUIDs ever collide?

In theory, but v4 has 122 random bits: you'd need to generate about a billion per second for 85 years for a 50% chance of one duplicate.

What are ULID and NanoID?

ULID is a 26-character, time-sortable ID in Crockford Base32. NanoID is a compact 21-character URL-safe random ID with similar collision resistance to UUID v4.
