How it's calculated

Frequently asked questions
How reliable are the ending rules?
Some are nearly perfect (German -ung, -chen; French -tion, -isme). Others are tendencies — German nouns ending in -e are feminine about 85% of the time. The tool shows the reliability for each prediction.
Why does a German compound take the gender of its last part?
The last word is the head of the compound: der Schrank → der Kühlschrank; das Haus → das Krankenhaus.
What about French nouns starting with a vowel?
They take l' in the singular (l'école, l'hôtel), so learn them with un/une to remember the gender.
