Frequently asked questions

When do RMDs start?

At age 73 for people born 1951–1959, and 75 for those born in 1960 or later. The first RMD can be delayed until April 1 of the following year.

When should I use a different table?

If your sole beneficiary is a spouse more than 10 years younger, the Joint Life table gives a smaller RMD. Inherited IRAs follow different rules.

What if I miss an RMD?

The excise tax is 25% of the shortfall, reduced to 10% if corrected promptly. Roth IRAs have no RMDs for the original owner.
