How it's calculated

Annual dividend = dividend per payment × payments per year. Yield = annual dividend ÷ price. Yield on cost = annual dividend ÷ your purchase price.

What's a good dividend yield?

Broad US stock indexes yield around 1–2%; established dividend payers often 2–5%. Very high yields can signal that the market expects a cut.

What is yield on cost?

Your dividend income divided by what you paid. It rises over time if the company grows its dividend.
