Retirement Calculator
Check whether your savings will last through retirement: projected balance at retirement, the income it can support and the age it might run out.
For information and education only — not financial advice. Results are estimates based on the numbers you enter; check important decisions with a qualified professional.
How to use
- 1Enter your age, planned retirement age and life expectancy.
- 2Enter current savings, monthly contributions and expected returns.
- 3Enter the yearly income you want in retirement (in today's money) and any pension or Social Security.
How it's calculated
Savings grow monthly until retirement. Afterwards, each year the income you need (grown by inflation, minus other income) is withdrawn and the rest keeps earning the post-retirement return, until life expectancy or the money runs out.
Frequently asked questions
What return should I assume?
Many planners use 5–7% before retirement for a stock-heavy portfolio and 3–5% after, when portfolios usually hold more bonds. Returns aren't guaranteed.
How much income will I need?
A common rule of thumb is 70–80% of your pre-retirement income, but your own budget is a better guide.
Does this include Social Security?
Enter your expected benefit as 'other income'. Get your personal estimate from ssa.gov/myaccount.
