How it's calculated
Resting energy (RER) = 70 × weight(kg)^0.75. Daily energy = RER × factor: e.g. neutered adult dog 1.6, intact 1.8, weight loss 1.0, puppy 2–3; neutered cat 1.2, intact 1.4, weight loss 0.8, kitten 2.5.

How accurate is this?
It's a starting point used by vets. Adjust portions by 10% up or down based on your pet's body condition over a few weeks.
Where do I find kcal per cup?
On the bag or can, usually as kcal/cup or kcal/kg. Treats should make up no more than 10% of daily calories.
My pet is overweight — what should I do?
Ask your vet for a target weight; feeding for the target (not current) weight with the weight-loss factor is common.
