How it's calculated
Google truncates by pixel width, not characters. Widths are estimated from average Arial character widths at 20 px (titles) and 14 px (descriptions). Limits used: ~580 px and ~920 px on desktop.

Why do character limits vary?
A title of wide letters (M, W) hits the limit sooner than one of narrow letters (i, l). Pixel width is the real constraint.
Will Google always use my meta description?
