Car Depreciation Calculator

Estimate how much value a new or used car loses each year, and what it will be worth after a number of years.

How to use

  1. 1Enter the purchase price and the car's age now.
  2. 2Adjust the first-year and later-year depreciation rates if you know better figures for your model.

How it's calculated

Typical pattern: about 20% in the first year, then about 15% of the remaining value each year. Value = price × (1 − r₁) × (1 − r)^(years − 1).

Frequently asked questions

How much does a new car lose in the first year?

Often around 20%, and roughly 40–60% over five years, depending heavily on make, model and mileage.

Which cars hold value best?

Popular trucks, some SUVs and brands with strong reliability reputations tend to depreciate more slowly.

Is this an actual valuation?

No — for a real figure, check Kelley Blue Book, Edmunds, or local used-car listings for your exact trim and mileage.
