How it's calculated
Great-circle distance by the haversine formula (Earth radius 6,371 km). Flight time ≈ distance ÷ 850 km/h + 30 minutes for taxi, climb and descent. CO₂ ≈ distance × factor per passenger-km × class multiplier (economy 1, premium 1.6, business 2.9, first 4).
Frequently asked questions
Why is the real route longer?
Aircraft follow airways, avoid restricted airspace and use winds, so actual distances are usually 5–10% longer than the great circle.
Why do business-class passengers have a bigger footprint?
Larger seats take up more of the cabin, so each passenger accounts for a bigger share of the aircraft's fuel.
Is the CO₂ figure exact?
No — it's an average. Aircraft type, load factor and route matter, and non-CO₂ effects at altitude add extra warming not included here.
