How it's calculated
Regulation (EC) 261/2004: ≥ 3 h arrival delay. Up to 1,500 km → €250; 1,500–3,500 km (or intra-EU over 1,500 km) → €400; over 3,500 km → €600. Reduced by 50% if the airline's rerouting got you there within 2, 3 or 4 hours respectively. UK261 uses £220/£350/£520.

All flights departing an EU (or UK, for UK261) airport, and flights arriving there on an EU (or UK) airline. Flights into the EU on non-EU airlines aren't covered.
What counts as extraordinary circumstances?
Events outside the airline's control — severe weather, air traffic control restrictions, security threats. Most technical problems are not extraordinary.
How do I claim?
Claim directly with the airline first (free). If refused, escalate to the national enforcement body or an approved dispute resolution scheme.
