Blood Pressure Category Checker
Classify a blood pressure reading as normal, elevated, stage 1 or stage 2 hypertension, or a hypertensive crisis using the AHA/ACC guidelines.
For general information only — not medical advice. Results are estimates; talk to a doctor or qualified health professional about your own health.
How to use
- 1Enter the systolic (top) and diastolic (bottom) numbers.
- 2See the category. Use the average of several readings, not a single one.
How it's calculated
AHA/ACC 2017: normal < 120 and < 80; elevated 120–129 and < 80; stage 1 130–139 or 80–89; stage 2 ≥ 140 or ≥ 90; crisis > 180 and/or > 120. The higher category of the two numbers applies.
Frequently asked questions
What should I do with a crisis reading?
Wait five minutes and re-test. If it's still over 180/120 with symptoms like chest pain, shortness of breath or vision changes, call emergency services.
Do other countries use the same categories?
Not exactly — UK (NICE) and European guidelines define hypertension from 140/90 in clinic readings. Your doctor will use local guidance.
How should I measure at home?
Sit quietly for 5 minutes, back supported, feet flat, arm at heart level, and take two readings a minute apart.
