Cholesterol Ratio Calculator

Calculate your total-to-HDL cholesterol ratio, LDL-to-HDL ratio and non-HDL cholesterol from a lipid panel, in mg/dL or mmol/L.

For general information only — not medical advice. Results are estimates; talk to a doctor or qualified health professional about your own health.

How to use

  1. 1Enter total cholesterol, HDL and LDL from your lipid panel.
  2. 2Choose the units your lab uses.

How it's calculated

Total/HDL ratio = total ÷ HDL. Non-HDL = total − HDL. A total/HDL ratio under 5 is generally desirable and under 3.5 is ideal.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the ratio matter?

It combines 'bad' and 'good' cholesterol into one risk marker. Doctors also look at LDL, non-HDL and your overall risk factors.

What's a good HDL level?

Generally 40 mg/dL (1.0 mmol/L) or higher for men and 50 mg/dL (1.3 mmol/L) or higher for women.

What's non-HDL cholesterol?

All the cholesterol carried by potentially harmful particles. Under 130 mg/dL (3.4 mmol/L) is a common target.
