Cycling Gear, Cadence & Speed Calculator
Calculate bike speed from cadence and gearing (chainring, cog, wheel size), plus gear ratio, gear inches and development.
For general information only — not medical advice. Results are estimates; talk to a doctor or qualified health professional about your own health.
How to use
- 1Enter your chainring and cog teeth and choose your wheel/tyre size.
- 2Enter your cadence to see the speed.
How it's calculated
Speed = cadence × (chainring ÷ cog) × wheel circumference × 60. Gear inches = (chainring ÷ cog) × wheel diameter (in). Development = metres travelled per pedal revolution.
Frequently asked questions
What cadence should I ride at?
Many riders cruise at 80–95 rpm. Higher cadences reduce strain on the knees and muscles at the same speed.
What's wheel circumference for 700×25c?
About 2,105 mm; 700×28c is about 2,136 mm and 29×2.2" MTB about 2,326 mm. Measure yours for best accuracy.
Why compare gear inches?
It lets you compare gearing across different chainrings, cogs and wheel sizes on one scale.
