Notice Period Calculator (UK Statutory Notice)
Work out your notice period and last working day — UK statutory minimum notice (one week per year of service, up to 12 weeks) or your contractual notice in weeks, months or days.
For general information only — not legal advice. Laws vary by location; consult a qualified lawyer.
How to use
- 1Choose who's giving notice and enter your start date and the date notice is given.
- 2Enter any contractual notice (it applies if longer than the statutory minimum).
- 3See the notice length and the last day of employment.
How it's calculated
Employer's statutory notice: 1 week after 1 month's service, then 1 week per complete year of service, up to 12 weeks. Employee's statutory notice: 1 week. A longer contractual notice applies instead. Notice usually starts the day after it's given.
Frequently asked questions
Can I be paid instead of working my notice?
Yes, if your contract has a pay in lieu of notice (PILON) clause or you agree. PILON is taxed as earnings.
What about garden leave?
Your employer can ask you to stay at home during notice if your contract allows. You're still employed and paid.
Does this work outside the UK?
Use the contractual option with your country's statutory period — e.g. in Germany § 622 BGB sets 4 weeks to the 15th or month-end, rising with service.
