Capacitor & Inductor Calculator
Calculate capacitive and inductive reactance at a frequency, the LC resonant frequency, and total capacitance or inductance in series and parallel.
How to use
- 1Choose a calculation.
- 2Enter component values (µF, mH) and frequency where needed; list several values separated by commas for series/parallel.
How it's calculated
Xc = 1 ÷ (2πfC). Xl = 2πfL. Resonance f₀ = 1 ÷ (2π√(LC)). Capacitors add in parallel; inductors add in series; the opposite combinations add as reciprocals.
Frequently asked questions
Why do capacitors combine opposite to resistors?
Parallel capacitors effectively increase plate area, so capacitance adds. In series, the charge path is longer, so reciprocals add.
What happens at resonance?
Xc equals Xl and they cancel, so an LC circuit's impedance is minimal (series) or maximal (parallel) at f₀.
What units should I use?
Capacitance in microfarads (µF), inductance in millihenries (mH), frequency in hertz.
