Density, Mass & Volume Calculator
Solve density = mass ÷ volume for any of the three, with a list of common material densities for reference.
How to use
- 1Choose what to calculate.
- 2Enter the other two values (in g and cm³, or kg and m³ — keep units consistent).
How it's calculated
ρ = m ÷ V; m = ρ × V; V = m ÷ ρ. Water is about 1 g/cm³ (1,000 kg/m³).
Frequently asked questions
Why do things float?
An object floats if its average density is lower than the fluid's. Ice (0.92 g/cm³) floats on water (1.00 g/cm³).
What units should I use?
Any consistent set: g and cm³ give g/cm³; kg and m³ give kg/m³ (1 g/cm³ = 1,000 kg/m³).
What's the densest element?
Osmium, at about 22.59 g/cm³.
