How it's calculated
Atom counts for each element form a system of linear equations. It's solved exactly with fractions, then scaled to the smallest whole numbers.
Frequently asked questions
Why won't my equation balance?
Check the formulas: an element that appears on only one side, or a typo in capitalization (CO vs Co), makes balancing impossible.
Does it balance charges in ionic equations?
Not yet — it balances atoms. For ionic redox equations, balance the charges separately.
What are the coefficients?
The numbers in front of each substance — the ratio of molecules (or moles) that react and form.
