How does it work?
It measures how much of each of the 12 notes the song uses and compares that profile with the typical profiles of all 24 major and minor keys (the Krumhansl–Schmuckler method).
Why is the relative key close behind?
Relative major and minor keys (like C major and A minor) share the same notes — listen for which chord feels like home.
