How it's calculated

Scales are interval patterns: major = W-W-H-W-W-W-H. Chords in a key are triads built by stacking every other note of the scale.

What are the chords in C major?

C, Dm, Em, F, G, Am and B° — I, ii, iii, IV, V, vi and vii°.

What's the relative minor?

The 6th note of a major scale — A minor for C major. They share the same notes and key signature.

What's the difference between the modes?

Each mode starts the major scale on a different degree, giving a different mood — Dorian is minor with a bright 6th, Mixolydian is major with a flat 7th.
