How it's calculated
Cues are parsed from either format; SRT uses numbered cues and commas in times (00:00:01,000), VTT starts with WEBVTT and uses dots (00:00:01.000).
Frequently asked questions
Which format should I use?
VTT for HTML5 <video> and web players; SRT for most editors, media players and YouTube uploads (which accept both).
Are styling and positions kept?
The text (including simple tags like <i>) is kept. VTT-only cue settings (position, align) are dropped when converting to SRT.
My file shows strange characters — why?
It's probably not UTF-8. Open it in a text editor and save as UTF-8 before pasting.
