Auto Loan Calculator
Calculate your car payment with sales tax, fees, down payment and trade-in value — including negative equity from a car you still owe on.
For information and education only — not financial advice. Results are estimates based on the numbers you enter; check important decisions with a qualified professional.
How to use
- 1Enter the car price, down payment and trade-in (value and amount still owed).
- 2Add sales tax and fees, then the rate and term to see the monthly payment.
How it's calculated
Taxable amount = price − trade-in (in most US states) or price. Loan = price + tax + fees − down − (trade-in value − amount owed). Payment uses the standard amortization formula.
Frequently asked questions
Does a trade-in reduce sales tax?
In most US states, yes — tax is charged on the price minus the trade-in. A few states (like California) tax the full price. Use the toggle to match yours.
What is negative equity?
Owing more on your trade-in than it's worth. The difference is added to the new loan, which raises your payment and interest.
Is a longer loan a good idea?
72–84 month loans lower the payment but cost more interest and make it easy to owe more than the car is worth.
