Sales Tax / VAT / GST Calculator

Add sales tax, VAT or GST to a price, or remove it from a tax-inclusive price to find the net amount and the tax paid.

For information and education only — not financial advice. Results are estimates based on the numbers you enter; check important decisions with a qualified professional.

How to use

  1. 1Enter the amount and the tax rate.
  2. 2Choose whether to add tax to a net price or remove it from a gross (tax-inclusive) price.

How it's calculated

Adding: gross = net × (1 + rate). Removing: net = gross ÷ (1 + rate), tax = gross − net. Removing tax is not the same as taking the rate off the gross price.

Frequently asked questions

How do I remove 20% VAT from a price?

Divide by 1.2, not multiply by 0.8. £120 including 20% VAT is £100 net plus £20 VAT; taking 20% off £120 would wrongly give £96.

What rate should I use?

It depends on where you are and what you sell — e.g. UK VAT is 20% standard, Germany 19%, Australia GST 10%, and US sales tax varies by state and city.

Is this suitable for filing tax returns?

It's a quick arithmetic helper. For returns, follow your tax authority's rules on rounding, reduced rates and exemptions.
