How it's calculated
X% of Y = X ÷ 100 × Y. X as a % of Y = X ÷ Y × 100. % change = (new − old) ÷ |old| × 100. % difference = |a − b| ÷ ((a + b) ÷ 2) × 100.
Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between percentage change and percentage difference?
Change compares a new value to an original one (direction matters). Difference compares two values with no 'original', using their average as the base.
Why doesn't a 50% rise followed by a 50% fall get me back to the start?
The fall applies to a bigger number. 100 + 50% = 150, then 150 − 50% = 75.
What's the difference between percent and percentage points?
Going from 4% to 5% is a rise of 1 percentage point, but a 25% increase in the rate itself.
