Polynomial Factoring Calculator
Factor polynomials with integer coefficients — common factors, rational roots, difference of squares and irreducible quadratics — and list all the roots.
How to use
- 1Type a polynomial in x with whole-number coefficients, e.g. 2x^3 - 3x^2 - 11x + 6.
- 2Read the factored form and the roots.
How it's calculated
The greatest common factor is taken out first. Rational roots p/q are found with the Rational Root Theorem (p divides the constant, q divides the leading coefficient) and divided out; a leftover quadratic is solved with the quadratic formula.
Frequently asked questions
Why is part of my answer left unfactored?
Factors with no rational roots — like x² + 4 or x² − 2 — can't be split over the integers. Their real or complex roots are still listed.
Can it factor expressions with two variables?
Not yet — it works with polynomials in x only.
What degree can it handle?
Any degree for rational roots; up to degree 2 for the leftover irrational or complex roots.
