Check whether a sofa, fridge or other furniture will fit through a doorway or hallway — including tilting it on its side or at an angle.
How to use
- 1Measure the doorway's clear width and height (door open, stops removed if needed).
- 2Enter the furniture's width, depth, height and, for sofas, the diagonal depth.
How it's calculated
It fits straight through if its two smallest dimensions fit the opening. Tilted sofas pass if the diagonal depth (from the back top to the front seat edge) is less than the door width.
Frequently asked questions
What is diagonal depth?
For sofas: lay a straight edge from the top of the back to the front of the arm, and measure from the bottom back corner to the middle of that edge.
Can I gain space in a doorway?
Removing the door from its hinges and the door stop moulding typically gains 1–2 in of width.
What about tight turns in hallways?
Turns are harder — the calculation here covers straight passages. For L-turns, measure the hallway width and try the move with a cardboard template.
