Frequently asked questions

What does the zone number mean?

Each zone is a 10°F band of average annual extreme minimum temperature; 'a' and 'b' split it into 5°F halves. Zone 7b means the coldest night of the year averages 5 to 10°F.

Did zones change in 2023?

Yes — the 2023 USDA map, based on 1991–2020 data, shifted about half of the US into a warmer half-zone compared with the 2012 map.

Does the zone cover everything plants need?

No — it only reflects winter cold. Summer heat, rainfall, soil and microclimates also matter.
