How it's calculated
Tiles = area ÷ ((tile length + joint) × (tile width + joint)) × (1 + waste). Grout volume = joint width × depth × (L + W) per tile; estimated at about 0.115 lb of dry sanded grout per cubic inch of joint.
Frequently asked questions
How much extra tile should I buy?
10% for simple layouts, 15–20% for diagonal patterns or large tiles with many cuts. Keep a few spares for future repairs.
What grout joint width should I use?
1/16–1/8 in for rectified porcelain and wall tile; 1/8–3/16 in for most floor tile; 1/4 in or more for rustic tile.
Sanded or unsanded grout?
Unsanded for joints under 1/8 in; sanded for 1/8 in and wider.
