How it's calculated
kWh per day = watts × hours ÷ 1000 × quantity. Cost = kWh × price per kWh. A month is taken as 30.42 days (365 ÷ 12).
Frequently asked questions
Where do I find an appliance's wattage?
On the rating label or in the manual. For devices listed in amps, multiply amps by your voltage (120 V in the US, 230 V in the UK/EU).
Why is my fridge's cost lower in real life?
Fridges, air conditioners and heaters cycle on and off, so they draw full power only part of the time. Use a plug-in energy meter for exact figures.
What's a typical electricity price?
Roughly $0.15–0.30 per kWh in the US and €0.20–0.40 in much of Europe, but check your own bill — rates vary a lot.
