Heat Pump Savings Calculator
Compare annual heating costs of a heat pump with a gas, oil, propane or electric furnace from your heat demand, fuel prices and efficiencies.
How to use
- 1Enter your yearly heating demand (from past fuel use) and current system.
- 2Enter fuel and electricity prices and the heat pump's seasonal efficiency (COP).
How it's calculated
Heat delivered = fuel used × energy content × efficiency. Heat pump electricity = heat ÷ COP. Costs use your prices. 1 therm = 100,000 BTU; 1 gal propane ≈ 91,500 BTU; 1 gal heating oil ≈ 138,500 BTU; 1 kWh = 3,412 BTU.
Frequently asked questions
What COP should I use?
Seasonal averages of about 2.5–3.5 are typical for modern air-source heat pumps; cold-climate models keep higher efficiency at low temperatures.
Does this include cooling?
No — only heating. A heat pump also replaces a central air conditioner, often with higher efficiency.
Are there incentives?
Many utilities and governments offer rebates or tax credits for heat pumps; check your local programs.
