How it's calculated
Area = Σ length × width. Order = area × (1 + waste). Boxes = order ÷ ft² per box. Carpet sq yd = ft² ÷ 9.
Frequently asked questions
How much waste should I allow?
About 10% for straight layouts, 15% for diagonal or herringbone patterns and rooms with many corners.
How is carpet sold?
In the US often by the square yard (9 sq ft), from rolls 12 or 15 ft wide — seams and roll width can add waste.
Should I include closets?
Yes, if they'll get the same floor. Measure each space as its own rectangle.
