  2. 2See the cost per year, month and day at the current cap.
  3. 3Compare with your actual tariff.

How it's calculated

Electricity: kWh × 26.32p + 54.83p a day (no VAT from October 2026 to March 2027). Gas: kWh × 7.97p + 29.68p a day (incl. 5% VAT). GB averages for Direct Debit; your region and payment method change the rates.

Frequently asked questions

Why is there no VAT on electricity?

The government removed VAT from household electricity bills from 1 October 2026 to 31 March 2027. Gas still has 5% VAT.

Is the price cap a cap on my bill?

No — it caps the unit rate and standing charge. Using more energy still costs more.

What is typical usage?

Ofgem's typical household uses about 2,700 kWh of electricity and 11,500 kWh of gas a year. Small flats use less; large houses more.
