Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between HS, HTS and CN codes?

The first 6 digits (HS) are the same in 200+ countries. Countries add digits for their own tariffs: the EU Combined Nomenclature uses 8 (10 in TARIC), the US HTS uses 10 for imports, the UK uses 10.

How do I pick the right code?

Classify by what the product is made of and what it does, following the General Interpretive Rules. When unsure, ask for a binding tariff information (BTI) ruling from customs.

Which HS edition is this?

The Harmonized System nomenclature from the open datasets/harmonized-system data (HS 2022). HS 2027 takes effect on 1 January 2027.
