How it's calculated
DIM weight = L × W × H ÷ divisor (inches → lb: 139 for UPS/FedEx retail, 166 for USPS; cm → kg: 5,000 for most express carriers). Billable weight = the greater of actual and DIM weight.
Frequently asked questions
Why do carriers charge by dimensional weight?
Large light boxes take up truck and plane space. DIM pricing charges for that space, not just the weight.
Should I round dimensions?
Carriers usually round each dimension to the nearest whole inch (or cm) and round the DIM weight up to the next pound or 0.5 kg.
How can I reduce DIM charges?
Use the smallest box that protects the item, and consider poly mailers for soft goods.
