How it's calculated
Income as % of the federal poverty line (2025 guidelines). Expected contribution = applicable % (2.10%–9.96%, Rev. Proc. 2025-25) × income. Subsidy = benchmark premium − expected contribution. Above 400% FPL, no subsidy.
Frequently asked questions
Why did my subsidy drop in 2026?
The enhanced subsidies from 2021–2025 expired at the end of 2025. Contributions are higher again, and households above 400% of the poverty line get no credit.
What if my income is under 100% FPL?
You generally can't get a premium tax credit; in states that expanded Medicaid, adults up to 138% FPL qualify for Medicaid instead.
What if my income changes?
Report it to the marketplace. The credit is reconciled on your tax return (Form 8962) — and from 2026 there's no cap on paying back excess advance credits.
