Frequently asked questions

When does ETIAS start?

Not yet. The EU removed its 'last quarter of 2026' target in July 2026, and a 2027 launch is now expected. When it starts there will be a transition period before it's mandatory. The Entry/Exit System (EES), which registers fingerprints and a photo at Schengen borders, is already running.

Is ESTA a visa?

No — it's an electronic travel authorization for Visa Waiver Program countries, for visits up to 90 days for tourism or business. If it's refused, you can still apply for a US visa.

How do I avoid scam sites?

Apply only at esta.cbp.dhs.gov (US), the official UK ETA app or gov.uk, canada.ca (eTA) and travel-europe.europa.eu (ETIAS).
