How it's calculated
Federal withholding = 22% of the bonus (37% on the part of supplemental wages above $1,000,000). FICA = 6.2% Social Security (up to the $184,500 wage base) + 1.45% Medicare. Actual tax on the bonus = your marginal rate × bonus.
Frequently asked questions
Are bonuses taxed more than salary?
No — they're taxed the same when you file. The flat 22% is just withholding; if your real bracket is 12%, you'll get the difference back as a refund.
Why was my bonus taxed so much?
22% federal + 7.65% FICA + state withholding often takes 30–40% up front.
Can I reduce tax on a bonus?
Putting part of it into your 401(k) or HSA (if your employer allows) lowers the taxable amount.
