  2. 2Enter the higher earner's adjusted net income.
  3. 3See the benefit, the charge and what you keep.

How it's calculated

Benefit = (£27.05 + £17.90 × other children) × weeks. Charge = 1% of the benefit for every £200 of adjusted net income over £60,000, reaching 100% at £80,000.

Frequently asked questions

Should I still claim if I earn over £80,000?

It's worth registering even if you opt out of payments: it protects National Insurance credits toward the State Pension for a parent not working, and gets your child a National Insurance number automatically.

Whose income counts?

The partner with the higher adjusted net income pays the charge — even if the other partner receives the benefit.

Can pension contributions reduce the charge?

Yes. Pension contributions and Gift Aid reduce adjusted net income, which can reduce or remove the charge.
