How it's calculated
AGI = income − ½ SE tax − adjustments. Taxable = AGI − max(standard, itemized) − senior/tips/overtime deductions. Tax = 2026 brackets (with long-term gains at 0/15/20%) − Child Tax Credit + SE tax + NIIT.
Frequently asked questions
What are the 2026 tax brackets?
10%, 12%, 22%, 24%, 32%, 35% and 37%. For single filers the 37% rate starts above $640,600 of taxable income ($768,700 for married filing jointly).
What's the 2026 standard deduction?
$16,100 single or married filing separately, $32,200 married filing jointly, $24,150 head of household — plus $1,650–$2,050 extra per person who is 65+ or blind, and the new $6,000 senior deduction.
What's the difference between marginal and effective rate?
The marginal rate applies to your next dollar of income; the effective rate is your total tax divided by your total income — always lower, because lower brackets apply first.
Is this my exact tax?
It's an estimate that covers the most common situations. Credits like education or energy credits, AMT and state taxes aren't included.
