How it's calculated
Employee contributions: AHV/IV/EO 5.3%, ALV 1.1% up to CHF 148,200, non-occupational accident insurance (~1%), BVG: half of the age-based credit (7/10/15/18%) on the coordinated salary (up to CHF 90,720 minus CHF 26,460). Federal tax: ESTV 2026 tariff on net salary minus professional expenses (3%, CHF 2,000–4,000) and the insurance deduction. Cantonal/communal tax: your rate × taxable income.
Frequently asked questions
What cantonal rate should I use?
It varies hugely: for a single person earning CHF 100,000, cantonal + communal tax is roughly 4–6% of taxable income in Zug or Schwyz, 7–9% in Zurich, and 10–12% in Geneva, Vaud or Bern. Your canton's online tax calculator gives the exact figure.
Is tax deducted from my salary?
Only for foreign workers without a C permit (withholding tax / Quellensteuer). Everyone else pays tax in instalments after receiving a bill.
Why does age matter?
Occupational pension (BVG) credits rise with age — 7% of the coordinated salary at 25–34 up to 18% at 55–65 — split between you and your employer.
