How it's calculated

Frequently asked questions
What state rate should I use?
Your state's effective rate — for example 0% in TX, FL, WA, NV, TN, SD, WY, AK and NH (on wages); roughly 3–6% in most others; up to about 9–11% for high earners in CA, NY, NJ, OR and HI.
Why doesn't my paycheck match exactly?
Employers use IRS withholding tables (Pub. 15-T) and your W-4 settings, which differ slightly from your actual annual tax. This shows your real annual tax spread evenly.
Do 401(k) contributions reduce FICA?
No — traditional 401(k) contributions reduce income tax only. HSA contributions through payroll (Section 125) reduce both.
