How to use
- 1Choose your plan and enter your salary.
- 2Enter your balance, interest rate and expected pay rises to project the future.
- 3See monthly repayments, total repaid and whether the loan is written off.
How it's calculated
Repayment = 9% of income above the plan threshold (6% above £21,000 for postgraduate). The projection adds interest yearly, grows your salary, keeps thresholds at today's level, and stops at the write-off date.
Frequently asked questions
Should I overpay my student loan?
Often not for Plan 2 and Plan 5 — most borrowers never clear the balance before write-off, so overpaying just reduces what's written off. If the projection shows you'll repay in full, overpaying can save interest.
When is the loan written off?
Plan 1: 25 years after you were first due to repay (or at 65 for older loans). Plan 2 and 4: 30 years. Plan 5: 40 years. Postgraduate: 30 years.
Does the loan affect my credit rating?
No — it isn't on your credit file, though mortgage lenders consider the monthly repayment as an outgoing.
