Tax Refund Estimator 2026

Estimate your federal tax refund (or balance due) for tax year 2026 from your income, withholding, dependents and deductions — including the new senior, tips and overtime deductions.

Estimates only — not tax advice. Tax rules change and depend on your situation; check with the tax authority or a tax professional.

How to use

  1. 1Enter your income and the federal tax withheld (W-2 box 2).
  2. 2Add dependents, deductions and estimated payments.
  3. 3See your expected refund or amount owed.

How it's calculated

Refund = withholding + estimated payments + refundable credits (EITC, refundable Child Tax Credit) − total tax.

Frequently asked questions

When will I get my refund?

Most e-filed returns with direct deposit are refunded within 21 days. Returns claiming the EITC or refundable Child Tax Credit aren't paid before mid-February.

Why is my refund smaller than last year?

Common reasons: a raise, less withholding, a child aging out of the Child Tax Credit, or side income without withholding.

Is a refund extra money?

No — it's your own over-withheld tax being returned.
