How it's calculated
First year: set by CO₂ band (£10 at 0 g/km up to £5,690 over 255 g/km; older-standard diesels pay one band higher). Years 2+: £200 a year, plus £440 for years 2–6 if the list price was over £40,000 (£50,000 for zero-emission cars). Applies to cars registered from 1 April 2017.

Do electric cars pay road tax?

What about cars registered before April 2017?
They're taxed on CO₂ bands A–M (2001–2017) or engine size (before 2001), with different rates. This calculator covers cars from April 2017.

Yes — paying by monthly Direct Debit adds 5%; paying every 6 months adds 10%.
