W-4 Withholding Estimator (Refund or Owe?)
Check if your paycheck withholding is on track for 2026 — project your tax, compare it with what you'll have withheld, and get the extra amount per paycheck to enter on your W-4.
Estimates only — not tax advice. Tax rules change and depend on your situation; check with the tax authority or a tax professional.
How to use
- 1Enter your annual pay, pay frequency and how much has been withheld so far.
- 2Enter how many paychecks are left this year.
- 3Use the suggested amount for Step 4(c) of your W-4.
How it's calculated
Projected withholding = withheld so far + (withholding per paycheck × paychecks left). Gap = projected 2026 tax − projected withholding. Extra per paycheck = gap ÷ paychecks left.
Frequently asked questions
Where do I find withholding so far?
On your latest pay stub, usually labeled “Federal income tax” or “FIT” year-to-date.
What's Step 4(c)?
The “extra withholding” line on Form W-4. Enter the per-paycheck amount and give the new W-4 to your employer.
Is a big refund good?
It means you over-withheld — an interest-free loan to the government. Many people prefer smaller paychecks withholding closer to their actual tax.
