How it's calculated

The credit phases in with earned income, is flat at the maximum, then phases out above $23,890 ($31,160 joint) with children, or $10,860 ($18,140 joint) without — using the 2026 IRS table.

Frequently asked questions

Who can claim the EITC?

Workers with earned income under the limits, a valid SSN, investment income of $12,200 or less, and (without children) age 25–64. Married filing separately generally can't claim it unless separated.

When is the refund paid?

By law, refunds that include the EITC can't be issued before mid-February; most arrive by early March for e-filers with direct deposit.

Is the EITC refundable?

Yes — you get the full credit even if you owe no tax.
